Be Mindful of the Images they see

I was talking to one of my coworkers about rap videos on cable. He was upset because he came home from work one evening and his teenage son, who was watching his younger daughter (age 4) was watching BET music videos and so was the 4 year old. He had told his son not to watch that station and got really angry when he saw him disobeying his directions. Needless to say, the videos he was watching were gangster rappers with bling, degrading language and hoochies. He punished the boy by the means that he saw fit, but was concerned because the video channels are running all the time, and eventhough he put a PG block on his cable, they were not blocked. I told him I did the same thing, but if you want to block music video channels you have to go through all the stations and block them one at a time. Just a hint to all those out there who don't want your children watching these negative images. You can block them if you have cable or satelite TV. It takes about 10 minutes, but it is a good, preventative way to control what your children's eyes and ears are exposed to.

Face it. Most people are not leaders. Most people are more than happy to follow someone who looks like he/she knows the way.

The Reverend Billy Graham tells of a time early in his career when he arrived in a smal town to preach a sermon. Wanting to mail a letter, he asked a young boy where the post office was. When the boy had told him, Dr. Graham thanked him and said, “If you’ll corr to the Baptist Church this evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven.

I don’t think I’ll be there, TI the boy said. “You don’t even know your way to the post office.” People want to follow people who seem to know where they’re going.

** DECISIVENESS INTIMIDATES the opposition.

When you come down quickly and confidently on one side of an issue, it takes your potential opponents off guard. They pause. They wonder if you know something they don know. And as a result, they often look elsewhere. They look for a different battle to fight.

So take a look at yourself. Do you sound decisive? Or are you guilty of mushy language like, “Well, maybe ... Perhaps . . . I’ll think about it . . . or . . . It all depends?” To be an effective leader, you’ve got to be self-assured, confident, and decisive without being arrogant, harsh or closed-minded. When you achieve that balance, you rally enthusiastic support and limit frivolous resistance.

** A MEDIOCRE decision made quickly can achieve better results than a good decision mad slowly.

That may sound strange, but it’s true. If you make a decision and move in that direction, you immediately get a new perspective. And that new perspective often makes the “right” decision or the “best” decision all the more obvious.

By contrast, if you’re stuck in analysis paralysis, if you simply can’t make a decision if you wait too long, you’re often forced to do too little too late. Fear has gotten t best of you. And the best opportunities have probably passed you by.

So what can you do about that fear . . . if you have it? I’ve found four ways you can overcome the fear of decisiveness.

Make sure you understand the meaning of decisiveness.

It’s not the same thing as being rash. It doesn’t mean that you make an instant, uninformed decision. That would be silly. And if that’s what you think decisiveness i no wonder you’re fearful. When you’re decisive, you make a decision. You take a stand. You follow a process that gives you the best decision in a timely manner. And I’ll outline that process in next week’s “Tuesday Tip”.

Accept the fear of rejection as normal.

If you’re like most people, you want to be loved and accepted. Yet, in a leadership role, there will he many times when you must make difficult decisions that others will criticize. So be it. That’s life. Clergyman William J. H. Boetcker said it very weli He said, “It is better to displease the people by doing what you know is right, than tc temporarily please them by doing what you know is wrong.”

Decide and act despite your fear.

Some people are struck numb by their fear of making the wrong decision or of making any decision whatsoever. They erroneously conclude that if they re fearful, they can’t do anything. Baloney. Peel the fear and do it anyway. Make a decision. As Grog Romaneck, the coordinator of Prairie School in The Ralb, Illinois, says, “As a leader, if you choc not to make difficult decisions, you will face even sterner criticism from people who legi.timately question your leadership credentials.”

Be wary of verbalizing your fears.

Getting good counsel from wise and trusted friends and colleagues is one thing. But talking to too many people about your fears is another thing. It could backfire. If you keep on talking about your fear of making the wrong decision, you will lose the support of others. And if you talk about your fear of certain people in the workplace, it could get hack to them in a way you wouldn’t like. Besides that, the more you talk about your fear, the more life you give it. Instead, tell yourself that you have the knowledge, wisdom, and confidence to make good decisions. And the more you affirm thos kinds of things, the more you’ll be that way. If you’re going to he an effective leader you must he decisive. In fact, about 2000 years ago, in the Book of James, we are told “A doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. They can’ make up their minds. They waver back and forth in everything they do.”

Barack Obama for the White House?

Hillary/Obama or Obama/Hillary? That is the question!

I heard the rumor that Hillary my choose Barack Obama as a running mate for 08. I think it should be the other way around. And please do not talk about Barack Obama's big ears because he is sensitive to that.

The question is can Obama take the heat of a campaign? He apparently almost threatened the columnist Maureen Dodd about being teased about his big ears. Your thoughts.

The Irak war and Sadam

Did anyone think that the Sadam hangging video clip was a mere act of some prison guard or rather it was all planned with the thought that once that video gets out, it will circulate the globe and get to the would be tyrant as a warning of what may come to them if they continue mistreating their own people?

Is he Black enough or is he White enough? That is the question.

I am starting to see all these stories about Sharpton dissing Obama. Most of the time I don't view it as dissing, I see it as holding his feet to the fire just like any other candidate. I guess people feel Al should automatically endorse him because he has black skin. Al wants democrats to win, he knows better than to sabotage the party.

In my opinion, anyone that Black America embraces, White America sees as suspect. That works both ways. The more whites embrace Obama the more Blacks will question him. I think if Jesse and Al came out and endorsed Obama early in the race, it would be a death sentence for Obama's candicy. Whites hate Jesse and Al and I think if they were supporting Obama early, their endorsement would do more harm than good for the majority.

I think Al feels that by playing into the riff (not endorsing him immediately) he is helping Obama. Don't forget Sharpton is a politician, and he knows how to use the media. He ain't stupid. I think it is a smart and calculated strategy for Blacks to fake
indifference. In an interview a few weeks ago Farrakhan mentioned it. The interviewer asked if he would endorse and meet Obama. He basically said he knows America hates him and he knows that meeting would be manipulated and misconstrued to hurt Obama. He said he would not force a meeting. He said his enemies would use it to attack Obama. He said he has not allowed himself to be used in that manner before for politicians and will resist now. He did wish him the best and said he is hopeful that he could be a strong leader.

I believe Al has the same hope and strategy. Al needs to keep his preferences close to the vest because if he doesn't it will sabotage Obama. He'll keep asking him the tough questions that need to be asked, forcing Obama to address issues that are of concern.

So every time you hear brother Al diss Obama, take it with a grain of salt, he's probably trying to soften White folks up for the okey doke. Maybe Al can convince white folks that Blacks are indifferent toward Obama. That couldn't do anything but make Obama more popular with whites, in my opinion.

Make no mistake despite the rhetoric, it will be (as it always is) white folks that elect the President. The 11% black population will never override the majority 75% white voters.

So when people continue to ask Black folks if Obama is black enuff, I think blacks should be coy. The question isn't if he Black enuff for the 10% black population to vote for him, ask them if he is white enuff for 75% of white Americans to vote for him. Don't let them flip it! If he is white enuff, then being Black enuff would be irrelevant, we'd be out voted. I am gonna preach and practice my strategy, at worse he is the lesser evil of the current candidates, which is who and how I always vote anyway.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich new attempt to be President

Can anyone in Ohio believe that Congressman Dennis Kucinich is trying decalred his candidacy for President again. I thought it was some sort of joke until I hear it on the news that he was actually planning to run again.

This man in my opinion knows how to get publicity for publicity sake. He knows damn well that he does not stand a chance to be a President in America; And I heard him say that the fact that the Democrats control the Congress means that the American poeple now would elect him as President.

Someone help me out here! I would like your opinion on this Dennis Kucinich thing.
